Seasonal Employment - Summer Staff

Our Summer Staff have a huge impact in the faith lives of young people. Join the team of over twenty college-age Christian Leaders, for a challenging and rewarding experience that is bound to change you. Summer begins with two weeks of staff training which prepare you for nine weeks with overnight cabin groups and day camps. We welcome staff from diverse backgrounds and faith journeys to share work together in this unequaled bonding experience. 

We hire 25-30 summer staff. First preference will be given to applicants who have completed at least one year of college or the equivalent. Summer staff positions include: Counselors, Village Leaders, Health Officer, Media Specialist, Kitchen Assistant, and Program Coordinators. Dining and Hospitality Assistant

Good Earth Village is an ecumenical ministry, serving congregations and individuals throughout Southeastern Minnesota. Employees shall manifest a spirit of Christian hospitality and service in dealing graciously with guests and all other people, and a strong sense of commitment to teamwork with other employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

The Dining and Hospitality Assistant shall be a person committed to Jesus Christ and the church and dedicated to working in a church related organization.

  • Must have a high energy level.

  • Significant experience cooking and cleaning food service areas for small and large groups is required.

  • Must have the ability and understanding of extending and teaching unsurpassed hospitality. Leadership skills including effective supervision of kitchen staff and volunteers are required.

  • Effective computer skills are needed. Must have the ability to solve problems, remain flexible, and adapt to any situation, often on short notice.

  • Demonstrated commitment to risk management policies and procedures (familiarity with ACA standards preferred) required.

  • Must have exceptional organizational skills with attention to detail.

  • Must demonstrate a willingness to serve at whatever needs to be done, often with long hours.

  • Individual shall have strong abilities in communication and organization.

  • Must have strong abilities to work well with others, be self-motivated, carry out projects, and be highly detail oriented.

  • Experience on camp staff, summer and/or full-time desired.

  • Safe Serv certification preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. General:

  • Provide quality food service for summer camping programs, year round retreat groups, and onsite events.

  • Ensure the kitchen is clean and neat and up to state standards and ACA (American Camping Association) standards at all times. Standards include responsibility of tasks related to food production, food delivery, and sanitation in accordance with current applicable federal, state, and local standards, guidelines and regulations.

  • Welcome and involve volunteers as appropriate in programs and events.

  • Food service for camp meals, both on-site and off-site.

  • Oversee and prepare retreat meals appropriate for age group in all retreat buildings as appropriate.

  • Assists with meal clean-up and dishes.

  • Cleans kitchen appliances and equipment as needed.

  • Provide a hospitality table and provide meals throughout the week for volunteers, committee meetings, board meetings, service project groups, etc. when needed.

  • Ensure all assigned housekeeping tasks are completed prior to group arrivals.

  • Maintain a welcoming and hospitable atmosphere for all guests.

  • Assist as needed for menu creation for both summer camp programming and year-round retreats.

2. Other:

  • Retreats happen all year. The Dining and Hospitality Assistant is responsible for coordinating with the Dining and Hospitality Manager well in advance of any requirements.

  • Administrative requirements will also include keeping track of assigned summer staff, kitchen assistants, menu assistance, and following through with coordinated state health and ACA policies and requirements.

  • Attend board meetings as requested.

  • Represent the organization both on-site with guests and in the community.

  • Attend outdoor ministry conferences, gatherings, and other continuing educational opportunities as directed by the Dining and Hospitality Manager, Director of Retreat Services, and/ or the Executive Director.

  • Have regular attendance and be punctual; Work weekends, holidays (if needed), additional shifts (day, evening, and nights), and overtime (only if approved by Director of Retreat Services); Be flexible and accept work assignments on other units or work areas, as needed.

3. Other Duties as Assigned

While this is a list of responsibilities, this position requires the ability and heart to do "whatever is needed" for the benefit of the ministry of Good Earth Village to the glory of Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord. Different seasons require a different intensity of effort, so the Food Service Manager must remain flexible.

Physical Duties of Food Service Cook and Hospitality Assistant

  • Must be able to make a variety of movements intermittently throughout the day.

  • Must be able to walk, stand, bend, twist, stoop, lift, carry, reach and grasp.

  • Must be able to push, pull, move and/or lift up to 50 pounds and be able to push, pull, move and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 10 feet.

  • Food Service and Housekeeping employees may be subject to standing for long periods of time, in a moist and warm environment. Food Service and Housekeeping Staff are exposed to equipment that may cause injury if operations are not followed and are exposed to chemicals that may be harmful if instructions for use are not followed properly.

Responsible to: The Dining and Hospitality Manager of Good Earth Village. The Director of Retreat Services has final authority of decisions made within the Food Service program and all staff are finally accountable to the Executive Director for all facets of the mission and operation of Good Earth Village.

Dining and Hospitality Assistant performance to be evaluated annually. Criminal background checks to be performed annually.

Job Type:
This is a part-time year-round position based out of Spring Valley, Minnesota.

Pay: $16.00/hr

Expected hours:
June-August: 60hrs-80hrs per pay period, September-May: estimated 5hr-20hr per pay period. Hours are based on booked retreats and scheduled programs.

 Experience level:

  • 1-2 years

Shifts vary as follows:

  • Day shift

  • Evening shift

  • Morning shift

Weekly day range:

  • Monday-Friday as needed

  • Weekends as needed
